Office Procedures

In addition to a number of other services, Dr. Penkar offers a number of in-office surgical and non-surgical procedures.

Bone Density (GE Machine)

During this procedure, Dr. Penkar will use x-ray technology to examine your bone density. This painless procedure can take up to 30 minutes, and is useful in the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis.

Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a procedure performed when Pap smear results come back abnormal. This procedure allows Dr. Penkar to take a closer look at your cervix and vagina for disease. Dr. Penkar will take a sample and send to a lab to test for disease or abnormalities. You may experience mild cramping after this procedure, and it is recommended to abstain from intercourse for seven days after the procedure.

Endometrial Ablation

If heavy periods are affecting your everyday life, endometrial ablation may be able to help. Endometrial ablation destroys the uterine lining, which treats dysfunctional or abnormal bleeding. During this procedure, Dr. Penkar will use NovaSure. This procedure uses the power of radiofrequency to destroy the endometrium.

Endometrial Biopsy

This procedure can be performed in office to take a sample from the uterine lining. This is usually done to aid doctors in diagnosis of abnormal uterine bleeding. The procedure is short and can cause mild cramping. Your period may be heavier than usual after the procedure.

LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure)

This procedure is performed to treat high-grade cervical dysplasia discovered during a colposcopic exam. During this procedure, Dr. Penkar will use a wire loop that contains an electric current. Using this tool, the abnormal cells are removed from the cervix. This tissue is then sent to a pathologist to examine, and results should be given a week after the procedure. You may experience cramping, and you will need to abstain from intercourse for a week following the procedure.

Permanent Sterilization

There are multiple methods of permanent sterilization. Dr. Penkar uses Essure. The Essure device works with your body to create a natural barrier to prevent pregnancy. The procedure takes about 10 minutes to complete. During that time, Dr. Penkar will insert a small, soft insert into each fallopian tube. Over the next three months, Essure works with your body to form a natural barrier within each of your fallopian tubes. These barriers prevent sperm from reaching the eggs. After three months, you will come in for an Essure confirmation test to ensure your fallopian tubes are completely blocked.

Sonohystograms

A sonohystogram is an ultrasound performed to evaluate abnormal uterine bleeding. During this procedure, Dr. Penkar will insert a small thin catheter into your cervix. The uterine cavity is then filled with sterile water. Dr. Penkar will then examine your uterus with a vaginal ultrasound.

Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds use medical ultrasonography to examine the female pelvic organs, specifically the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder and anything in the pelvis of relevancy,
